1940's Era Cottage Restoration

This is one thing I have been working on lately... the area surrounding my whirlpool tub. That is a real 1940's Ironstone rock wall to the left running the length of that wall. (Bug light is for function not decor.)

The wall covering is made from a scenic shower curtain I found on Temu surrounded by silk flowers matching the mural at the top. It took a long time to decide on the design. There were so many wonderful possibilities for these scenic curtains! This one seemed almost exactly what I was looking for. However, it required some tweaking. That central sailboat had the sails pulled down in a closed position as with the rest of the anchored boats. That didn't seem very happy to me, so I painted in the sails with acrylic fabric paint. Fond memories of my family owned and operated sail making business and sailing in my younger years may be the reason I found the lack of visible sails an unhappy element.

The second customization was the mid upper right side of the design. The design was very dark, almost black as if in shadows on that side. I painted over the back area to extend the brown plank effect and added in the spray of small pink flowers and bluish green ivy. This is an area where I enjoy the tub while watching the sunset every evening so it had to have a happy feel, not a shadowy one.

One year, for my birthday, my husband purchased all the silk roses he could find and brought them home to me. I have enjoyed the roses on the surrounding floor and reliving that birthday moment for many years now.

That ceiling with a curve down is another prior story I am not sure I want to get into. To be brief, I left a gap and placed recessed lights shining down upon the rock wall. I think I may have mentioned a while ago that I ordered and was awaiting ceiling tiles from Temu. The trouble with them was they arrived with an extremely shiny finish I wasn't aware of. This in a room with 3 sliding doors and a lot of sunlight! It was horrible. I finally decided to make a modge podge sealer with Elmers glue and water to provide a matte finish for the tiles. It was an annoying process of trial and error.

I was working with a damaged ceiling to begin with due to a roof leak. It had caved in in some places. The roof was professionally repaired, but not the ceiling. This is the room we mainly live and sleep so I did not want to go through having workers here. I removed the old tile and sheet rock that had fallen in upon some areas and reattached the old tile with screws to level out the ceiling as much as possible. Then, I put the modge podged tiles over it all. That charming? curve you see over the rocks, is due to an inability to correct the falling in on the wall edge although it is consistent and stable and now providing a holding area for remote controlled recessed spotlights illuminating the rock wall. That wall is very beautiful in areas. I have a long fanciful story about that wall I may go into some day.

I spent time at this rock cottage when i was 18 years old. It belonged to my husband that long ago. My husband in that era was the bass player in a band with my current husband as the drummer in those days. An odd part about this story is that as they wrote songs and practiced, I sat on a sofa crocheting while listening to the sessions and looking out a window into the area where this room was added on many years later. Although, I didn't understand the context, I had flashes of a life in this room at that time.

And, prior to that, when I was around 16, before I had ever met anyone, I had recurring dreams about being happy watching sunsets while enjoying relaxing in a small shallow pond in a cave looking out towards the sunset with a small town in the distance. In the dream, I was conversing with someone sitting to my right in the shadows I could not see, but could converse with. That is exactly the situation in this room now and feels the same as that dream. My husband's computer desk is in that area I heard the voice from in the dream with my desk between his and the whirlpool facing the mural wall and the sliding patio doors out to the pasture and pond.
