  20. >

    how fitting!

    smmileee

    it seems we have
    survived the apocalypse

    or apocali

    if such an event
    could be plural

    i counted four
    that came and went
    this past week

    the most prevalent
    of which
    knocked at the door yesterday

    the lunar eclipse
    the blood moon

    but failed doomsday predictions
    are nothing new

    they have a peculiar way
    of appearing conveniently
when the sun or moon eclipses
    or when small numbers
    match up
    with larger numbers

    and even more so
    when both scenarios
    occur simultaneously

    but today
    is a special day
for the part of the audience
    that doesn't cringe
    when the actor
    messes up his monologue

    a simple web search
    will lead one to
    a plethora of gurus
who have made their god's decision
    for him

    and now have
    to talk themselves
    back to relevance

    we cannot forget
    either
the gurus who have done this before
    and know better now

    so they
    show their support
    in more subtle ways

    they "like" a certain post
    on their forum

they post a link to a particular video

    they interview
    someone with bizarre claims
    who they can conveniently
    throw under the bus
once the failed event has passed
    and the ratings have leveled

    easy enough to walk from
    or later modify

    all of these

    but i consider again
    then

    are they talking themselves
    into relevance
    following a failed prediction

    or is this
    an overproduced
    story of redemption
    and changing characters
that the audience has no clue
    is going on
    as the seats are emptied
    and filled
by a generally non committed fan base
    that does not desire
    to think longitudinally?

    why do you
    buy your water?

  21. Here's a due of musical talent. Pearl Jam & the Finn brothers, Tim & Neil (from Split Endz & Crowded House) performing "I got you" live with verses exchanged between Vedder and Neil Finn and Pearl Jam as the backing band...great song and awesome performance!

I was fortunate to see Midnight Oil for the first time on their Diesel and Dust tour in 86. One of the most powerful live acts I have ever seen.
This performance from 1982 captures their intensity imo:

  24. i came across this song again today

    this used to be
    one of the something's
    i'd listen to
    when driving about
with whomever i was in love with
    at the time

    being 16
    or 17
    or whatever

    and we'd dream
    out loud
    driving fast
    in hardly drivable vehicles
    about how our lives together
    would be
    and how anything before
    we met each other
    was less than real

    how graduating high school
    would mean everything
    to everyone

    but more so us
    because we were special
    of course
because we had it figured out
    ;)

    yes
    we were going to collect
all the dusty books in the world
    and i would travel about
    as a musician
    or a romantic
    we were never quite sure
and each time i would return
    and embrace her
    above the threshold
    of our cheap apartment
    i would have the stories
    of a lifetime to share
    and everything
    would be as magical
    as christmas morning
    at a moderately wealthy
    family's home....

    but they all became
    the ones that got away
    at some point

    and later
    they would become
    the one that came back

    and even later
    we'd become
    "the ones
    who mutually decided
    to part ways"

    it's funny how
    actions become fewer
    but words
    become more

    i watch
    the friends i had
    at that time
    slowly fade
    into a poorer version
    of their parents

    in both assets
    and experiences

    things to reminisce about
    when all you can recall
    is how that kiss
    made you feel

    or how playing that guitar
in front of all those strangers
    made you smile
    more than anything before

    i sometimes find myself wondering
    what happened
    to these poor acquaintances

    or maybe what never happened
    to them

    yeah.....
    maybe that is more apt

    did they never
    receive an invite
    to step outside
    the slow waters?

    did they never ask?

    were they chasing something
    they were destined
    not to ever catch
    because
it is one of those things
    where enough
    is never enough?

    i observed a good friend
    at the time
    chase a paycheck
    with those two zeros
    on the other side
    of the decimal

    he pursued it
    so deeply
that even if he ever caught it
    he would have nothing left
    to do
but look for another of such
    with even more zeroes

    of course then
he'd be driving a faster vehicle
    to repeat the process
    a little more quickly

    but would he still drive
    with the windows down?

    would he still listen to
    that old song
    he used to when
    he was 16
    or 17
    or whatever

    when he drove around
with the love of his life

    dreaming aloud
    of what they
    would do
    with all of eternity
    before their feet?

    i wonder now
    if that is all he
    and all the others
    ever wanted

    to have the freedom
    to pack a lunch
with the love of their life
    any day of the week
    and drive across the state
    in any kind of vehicle
so long as it has a radio
    and windows that roll down
    so they could dream
    together
    about everything
they have the ability to do
    and will do
    should they desire to

    driving
    onto a highway
    that blends into the horizon

    and not asking

    where does
    this road end up?

    i wonder
    if this pursuit of money

    or this passion
    for the knowledge
    of the trivial

    is an escaping desire
    to recapture
    the freedoms
    they set aside
    to acquire
    the means
    to later reacquire
    the freedoms
    they set aside
    in the first place.

    selling a hat
    only to buy it back
    a month later
    for twice the price

    and you then remember
    after exchanging the cash
    that it'll be
    autumn again anyway
    in another week.

  25. This is another song by the great Midnight Oil. Released in 1990 - The lyrics for this song I think are growing more and more relevant! This band tackles realistic subject matter in their songs as appose to just the self expression of neurotic feelings. I have massive respect for the ability to write these kinds of songs. Catchy, great passionate music with passionate lyrics that apply to us all!
I really hope you enjoy this one and any feedback on what it did for you when you listened to it would be great!!
    ENJOY!

  26. This is a great song that addresses real problems within a society (Australia's treatment of Aboriginals). This is so clever and brave in my opinion to put your circumstantial privilege (white skin in the western world) & ideals out there over just capitalizing on your own career/talent for your own gain.
    Enjoy!
